General Liability Insurance

General Liability Insurance

General liability is the policy that pays when somebody outside your business gets hurt or has property damaged because of your operations. It's the foundation of almost every commercial insurance program, and many landlords and clients require it before they'll sign a contract or lease.

What general liability covers

Third-party bodily injury

A customer slips and falls in your business or on a job site

Third-party property damage
Personal and advertising injury
Products and completed operations
Medical payments
Defense costs
A woman in a hat and sunglasses looks out of the car window and relaxes. Buying a car. Travel, tourism, recreation.

What general liability does not cover

General liability doesn't cover injuries to your employees (that's workers' comp), damage to vehicles you own (that's commercial auto), damage to your own building or contents (that's
property), or claims tied to professional advice (that's professional liability or errors and
omissions). We make sure clients know what each policy does so there are no surprises at
claim time

Common limits

Most small businesses carry $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Higher limits or an umbrella policy are common when contracts require them.
